Interview with Secondborn

1. Where did you guys meet?

Most of us met through music some way or another. Our singer Daniel and Stefan were actually working with students at Tim’s music studio. Lee our drummer the same, but a little later down the road. Pat and Tim have known each other for years through various bands that they played in. Alex the bass player, is actually a funny story. Tim was looking for someone to play bass and while getting a quick coffee at Starbucks, asked Alex if he played music because he looked like a musician. Now Alex is playing bass for us. Altogether, the meeting of all of our members has been a culmination of many years of roaming around meeting new musicians.

2. Where are you from?                                                                                                                                                                                                                    We are based out of Lafayette, Louisiana.

3. How long has you band been together?

The band has been together for about 3 years now. It started out as just a writing project between Daniel and Tim a few years ago and has grown into a full blown band beginning shortly after they started writing some material.

4. How did you come up with your band name?

Daniel and Tim wanted a name that was meaningful to them personally.  After several ideas they came up with Secondborn because they were both the 2nd children in their families.

5.What genre do you classify yourself as?

We normally describe ourselves as a post-hardcore genre. We try to pull some influence from electronic genres as well though. Maybe we’re becoming a genre? A lot of bands are rotating back to a post-hardcore style with a little electronic influence.

6. do you have any albums?

Yeah actually. We have 2 records out (both are EPs). The first EP is titled “A Call to Arms” and the second being our latest titled “Symbols”. Be on the lookout for the 3rd very soon 😉

7. what are the band member names, and what instruments do you play?

Daniel Pinner – Vocals Tim Benson – Lead/Rhythm Guitar/Backing Vocals Stefan Hawkins – Lead/Rhythm Guitar/Back Vocals Patrick Trumps – Rhythm Guitar/Backing Vocals Alex Daigle – Bass Guitar Lee Gauthreaux – Drums

8. what is a famous band that inspires you?

Saosin, Hands Like Houses & Periphery to name a few.

9. how did you decide to become musicians?

All of us started in different ways, we all had a passion for it since we were young so it just made sense to pick up an instrument.

10. important question here, do you love tacos?

Oh Yes we all love tacos, who doesn’t love tacos!

11.  what is the first song you played live?

The first song we played live was our first single was “A Call To Arms”.  It was actually for our Music Video shoot for it.  That was also the first time we all played together as a full band.

12. how long have you been playing the type of music you play now?

Right at 3 Years

13. what kind of shows do you put on?

We leave it all out on the stage.  We want people to leave our shows wanting more!

14. describe your music in 3 words?

Energetic infectious rock

15. give me some dirt on an anonymous member in the band thats done some crazy shit at a show.

One of the guys got a little too drunk at our first show and he ended up asleep on top of some of the gear in the truck. (I know that is kind of boring for a rock band but most of us got our crazy antics out in our early 20’s)

16. if you had the opportunity to change something about the music industry what would it be?

We wish it could be a little more transparent, all the wheeling and dealing can be a headache and really stunts the creative process.

17. what are your favorite venues to play at?

Honestly we love playing anywhere that will have us, there is nothing like the rush of a live show whether it’s at a hole in the wall around the corner or a show at The Hard Rock.  We love to play and share our music!

18. what is one of the craziest thing or body part a fan asked you to autograph?

We haven’t gotten any of those yet, but there are few places I hope we can avoid.

19. do you have any upcoming albums or singles?

Yes we have a new single coming out in March and one in either late April or early May.  We are currently working on writing, recording and producing our first full length album that we will have out this summer.

21. do you have any music videos?

Yes we have full videos for “A Call to Arms” and “Secrets” and also a lyric video for “Say Love.   We are currently working on pre-production for our next two singles.

22. do you like to do open mic’s with locals Musicians?

Does Karaoke count?

23. what is the best show you ever put on?

We opened for 12 Stones at local Venue here.  That night everything came together for us to have an amazing performance

24. what was the worst show like?

Well, we had a local venue here that had not really done their research on the best way to set up for live music, mixed with used equipment.  Half of the speakers were blown and the sound was just horrible. They have since closed.

25. how important is it to you to have support of stations like Ourtownradio?

It is Indie stations like Ourtownradio that make it possible for us to do what we do.  We are completely self-funded at the moment and write, produce and record all of our music ourselves.  We pretty much run our own ship and without amazing stations like yours, we would have a hard time getting our music out there and that is our dream!

26. what is the longest tour you have gone on?

We did 2 shows in one week, does that count?  But seriously we are hoping to be able to go on a few mini-tours this summer to support our new record.  We are really just starting out.  3 years for a band is not a long time in the industry.

27. what is your favorite city you’ve been to?

Hopefully we will have an answer for that one this summer 

28. what do you tour in?

When we do hit the road it will more than likely be a car pool situation.

29. who are some of your favorite local bands from your area?

The Other LA, Viridian, The American Tragedy use to be big and they are doing some shows lately so we are hoping they are starting up again.

30 who would you tour with if given the opportunity?

A Day To Remember, Rise Against, 30 Seconds To Mars, Bring me the Horizon I mean the list could go on for ever.

31. do you have any stalkers?

If we do they are very good, because we don’t know about them

32. how many times a week do you practice?

We practice as a band once a week and also have 1 studio for writing and recording

33. where was the worst place someone int he band has passed out?

Well it has only happened once since we have been a band, and it was on top of the equipment in one of our cars
